The bar graph shows the changes in the travel modes to and from work in a city throughout 50 years (1950 -2000) . A related newspaper report highlighted the Minister of Environment's concern of the need to protect the environment and also to encourage people to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Generally, the number of the mode of transport used by people who travel to and from work had increased throughout the years from only 4 in 1950 to 6 in 2000 (Analysis)

In general, it was obvious that the use of motorised vehicles had increased since 1950 while the non-motorized mode of travelling had decreased significantly      (synthesis)

KEY FEATURES
-        Analysis of Data

-        Synthesis of Data

-

The most popular means of transport to the workplace were found to be different for three different years; the bicycle in 1950 (40% of travellers), the bus in 1975 (about 35%), and the car in 2000 (40%).

Going to work on foot was 30% in 1950 plummeting to a 10% in 1975 and dipping further to a mere 3% in 2000.

While walking was getting less and less popular as an option, the use of cars however, showed a tremendous increase as the years progressed.

Walking was getting less and less popular as an option.
On the other hand/However, the use of cars showed a tremendous increase as the years progressed.

Between 1950 and 1975 there was an increase of 20% and by 2000 the total figure soared to 40%
(the key feature (the use of cars) was in the sentence before = statement becomes an analysis)
(The use of cars showed an increase of 20% between 1950 and 1975 and the total figure soared to 40% by 2000)

Test yourself: Identify the KF, Trend and Data:

There was also a dramatic drop of 30% in the number of people who cycled to work between 1950 and 1975

Commuting by train rose by approximately 12% between 1875 and 2000.

CONCLUSION

The data shows that motorised vehicles took precedence over walking and cycling over the three years.
(no link = not a synthesis)
The Environment Minister has urged people to protect the environment and lead a better lifestyle by taking the train, car-pooling, cycling,  and walking.
